You are here: Pet Hardware Snap Hooks Swedish Snap Hooks Swedish snap hook 49 mm/11 – Zinc Plated
Sometimes you need the confidence that the connection between the leash and harness simply holds – yet can still be released without a struggle, even when it’s freezing and your fingers refuse to cooperate. A Swedish-type snap hook handles that with ease. Its steel construction made from riveted components stands up to moisture, dirt and serious pulling force, while the mechanism remains reliable even in sub-zero conditions.
And a few honest notes: Steel is heavier than aluminum or plastic, so the snap hook may jingle in motion. The surface finish (especially Zinc Plated) will pick up scratches over time from sand and small stones. On the other hand, with occasional cleaning and a spray of #WD-40/450, the mechanism will keep running smoothly for years.
The Swedish snap hook is a legend among dog owners, mainly thanks to its reliability in freezing temperatures and muddy conditions. The mechanism is designed so there is virtually nothing that can jam – even if sand or snow gets inside, it remains easy to operate, even with gloves on.
A workshop tip from my side: When choosing the right version, the eye shape matters most. If you are making a rope leash, go for a round eye. For webbings, however, a square eye is the clear choice. The webbing sits flat, does not bunch up, and the load is distributed evenly, which significantly reduces material stress and extends the lifespan of the entire leash.
Maintenance tip: Although steel is highly durable, the black finish is more prone to visible scratches from stones. If you are designing gear for demanding terrain, I recommend the classic zinc-plated option. And one last piece of advice: even this solid snap hook will thank you if you occasionally blow out the dust and lightly lubricate the mechanism with any quality metal lubricant.
