Snappy advises
Alcohol-based dyes penetrate deep into the leather structure and colour it through, instead of forming a surface layer like acrylic dyes. The grain stays visible, the leather keeps its natural look and flexibility, and the colour doesn't peel off because there's nothing to peel. They dry fast and work best on vegetable-tanned leather without a surface finish. They suit collars, leashes, belts and saddlery goods where the character of the material should stand out.
We stock the classic Fiebing's Leather Dye line and the richer Fiebing's Pro Dye with more even colouring, complemented by Eco-Flo and Renia dyes. 28 shades in total, from black through the range of browns and tans to reds, blues and greens.
Not sure about the shade? Screens distort colours. Our online colour chart shows real photos of dyed leather for all shades, patinas and dyes in stock. Treat the chart as a guide. The final shade always depends on the leather type, tanning method and the specific batch.
Pavla's hands-on view of alcohol based dyes — what caught her attention and what to watch out for when making and choosing.
I use Fiebing's alcohol dyes on collars and belts made from vegetable-tanned cowhide when the grain should stay visible. I apply with a wool dauber in circular strokes, and for lighter shades I dilute the dye with alcohol roughly one to one. It dries within minutes, then I buff off the excess pigment with a rag, otherwise the colour rubs off onto the dog's coat and clothing. The Pro line colours more evenly, with the classic line I need more coats to avoid blotches.
Alcohol dries the leather out, so after dyeing I always replenish with oil and seal the surface with a finisher. On chrome-tanned leather with a closed surface the alcohol dye won't take, there I reach for acrylic.
