The dimension of the whole piece, end to end. It tells you how much room the fitting takes on the finished item; what size ring it can clip onto is decided by Gate opening. The whole piece is measured, not just its working part, so two pieces with the same gate opening can differ in length.

Gate opening indicates how wide the snap hook opens. It determines the maximum diameter of the ring or D-ring the hook can clip onto.

The diameter of the round stock the piece is bent or formed from. Thicker stock takes more load, but eats more room in the slot and prints through more under the webbing. It is not added to the inner dimension once: the outer size is the inner one plus twice this diameter.
