Acrylic dyes are opaque paints for surface colouring of leather. Unlike alcohol-based dyes, they don't penetrate the leather structure but form a pigmented layer on the surface. That's why they cover richly and evenly even darker leather and work on smooth-grain hides. Once dry, the layer stays flexible, so it doesn't crack on the bends of collars, leashes, belts or straps.
We stock dyes by Angelus and Eco-Flo. Besides classic shades (black, browns and tan tones, reds, blues), matte, metallic, neon and pastel variants are in stock too.
Not sure about the shade? Screens distort colours. Our online colour chart shows real photos of dyed leather for all shades, patinas and acrylic dyes in stock. Treat the chart as a guide. The final shade always depends on the leather type, tanning method and the specific batch.
Pavla's hands-on view of acrylic dyes — what caught her attention and what to watch out for when making and choosing.
I use Angelus acrylic dyes for opaque colouring of collars made from vegetable-tanned cowhide, mainly when I want a rich shade that alcohol dyes can't deliver. I apply it with a sponge in two thin coats, letting them dry for about twenty minutes in between. A 29.5 ml bottle lasts me roughly ten collars. Once dry, the layer flexes and doesn't crack at the buckle bend even after months of wear.
Don't put it on leather with a closed lacquered surface, the dye won't hold and peels off. And plan for a finisher, without a protective lacquer the surface wears through in high-friction spots. For translucent colouring where the grain should stay visible, I stick with alcohol dyes, acrylic covers it up.
