Thread the elastic or a leather strap through the eye of the clip and sew or rivet it. The finished suspenders are then held on the waistband by a lever that presses the jaws together, and a plastic insert keeps the metal edges off the fabric. Round and square clips work the same way. They hold by jaw pressure alone, so they suit everyday wear rather than suspenders under heavy pull.
