An ordinary slide buckle holds webbing by friction alone, and slippery elastic gradually works loose in it. A suspender slider grips it with a toothed clamp, so the length stays put and there is nothing to punch. Straighten the elastic before you close the clamp, otherwise the teeth catch it at an angle and the edges may fray. How thick a material fits is set by the inner height listed for each variant.
