The loop is, for me, an invisible guardian in the workshop. I have extensive experience in manufacturing leather collars, and a loop should never be missing – it acts as a fixed keeper that holds everything together. Without it, the free end would not only hang loose, but more importantly, the collar would not function properly. By pressing the strap end firmly back against itself, the loop helps the buckle stay securely closed and prevents it from opening unintentionally.
My practical advice: This is where the rule really applies – measure twice and order once. It is not meant to scare you, just a hard reality. Take a solid leather collar, fold the free end over, and you are immediately at 6–8 mm of material thickness. And if you also like to add a lining, for example felt or soft leather, the thickness increases even more significantly. Because this loop is designed as a “low-profile” piece so it does not look bulky on the dog’s neck, it has its limits in terms of clearance.
Before adding it to your cart, take a caliper and measure the total thickness of your material “sandwich.” Then check our size chart to make sure it truly fits within the inner opening of the loop. It is frustrating to finish a product only to find out that you simply cannot slide the loop on. And one final tip: the loop is also an ideal place to attach a dog tag so it does not swing around freely.
