You are here: Pet Hardware Leather Materials Cowhides Cowhide leather – double butts, red
Cowhide split leather (Double Butts – Split leather), 2.8–3.2 mm thick, vegetable-tanned, with a pigmented surface finish. The smooth, semi-gloss, colour-matched surface is ready to work with straight away – no dyeing or varnishing needed.
Split leather is the lower layer of the hide, without a natural grain; its appearance comes from a pigmented colour and protective coating. This evens out the shade, makes cleaning easier and limits how far dirt and short-term moisture reach the surface. At a lower price than full-grain leather.

A pigmented surface does not develop a patina the way full-grain leather does. Where it is bent or rubbed often, and along the edges, it may in time go matt, scuff, crack or partly flake off – most noticeably on narrow straps, handles and around buckles. On parts like these it pays to line, reinforce and finish the edges carefully. How long the finished item lasts also depends on its construction, width, method of joining and how intensively it is used.
Clean with a soft damp cloth (Leather Soap Universal #MNK/40g). Don't leave the material soaked, and don't use solvents or stiff brushes. Products made to nourish full-grain leather may not penetrate a pigmented coating – test them on a hidden spot first.
Leather is a natural material – hides vary in thickness, firmness, stretch and shade, and may show small irregularities, scratches or marks from processing.
