The center bar buckle is the “workhorse” of the saddler’s workshop. With this kind of hardware, design takes a back seat - strength and absolute clarity of the connection come first. Both rider and maker need to see at a glance that the tongue sits properly in the hole and that the material will hold it safely.
My workshop recommendation (Safety rule): Stirrup leathers take extreme loads, so choose the highest-quality, firm, dense leather you can get. Watch your stitching technique: Always run stitches only along the edges of the strap. Never stitch straight across the full width of the leather! That kind of stitching creates a weak line (a perforation) where the strap could tear under load.
Material tip: For equipment that is used daily and exposed to sweat, I recommend choosing the stainless steel version. It is the best investment you can make in long-term safety and consistent performance.
