Dr. Jackson's Pure Neatsfoot Oil is a 100% natural neatsfoot oil and a time-tested solution for deep leather conditioning and restoration. It helps replenish the leather’s natural oils that get depleted by sun exposure, heat, and hard everyday use.

Unlike surface conditioners, this oil penetrates deep between the leather’s collagen fibers, lubricating them and helping the material stay permanently supple and elastic. It’s an ideal choice for heavily used items like saddles, harnesses, work boots, outdoor gear (including baseball gloves), and thick straps anywhere toughness and long service life matter most.

Key features for makers:

  • Deep nourishment: Effectively softens stiff leather, restores flexibility, and helps prevent cracking on the grain side.
  • Moisture resistance: Saturating the fibers increases the leather’s natural water repellency without sealing the pores so the material can still breathe.
  • Purely natural composition: A 100% animal-based product with no synthetic additives, ensuring excellent compatibility with vegetable-tanned leather.
  • Effect on patina: Application speeds up the leather’s aging process and noticeably darkens the shade, bringing out a more rustic character.

Recommended application: Apply to clean leather using a cloth, sponge, or wool pad. Let the oil absorb thoroughly, then wipe off any excess that the material didn’t take in with a clean cloth. Apply in thin layers over-saturating can make the leather too soft and reduce its ability to hold shape.

Not suitable for suede or brushed leathers.

Craft isn't just about feel – it's about understanding the material and the process. If it works in my workshop, it'll work in yours.

Neatsfoot oil is an absolute classic in any leather workshop, but it needs to be handled with care. It is the strongest option for softening leather, giving it remarkable suppleness – yet it comes with a few important rules.

Watch the color: Keep in mind that the oil will noticeably darken the leather. Any alcohol-based dye applied afterwards will always appear richer and deeper in tone. If you want to preserve a lighter shade, use the oil sparingly.

Less is more: The biggest mistake is to “drown” the leather in oil. Overdo it and the fibers loosen to the point where the leather loses its structure and turns limp. Apply the oil in one thin, even coat instead.

Reviving old leather: When restoring dry or stiff leather, apply the oil in several very light coats with a 24-hour interval between applications. Gradual layering allows the fibers to relax slowly without oversaturating the material.

Tip from practice - prep before dyeing: Alcohol-based dyes dry leather out aggressively. Unless you are using dyes that already contain oils, I recommend lightly oiling the leather before dyeing. My tried-and-tested method: I apply the oil in the evening and let the leather rest overnight. The oil settles in beautifully and penetrates deep into the fibers. Dyeing the next day is a pleasure – the color spreads evenly without blotches, and once dry, the leather remains supple and alive.
