Stitching Awl Kemovan 2.5 mm
Precise stitches, less effort, and the joy of working – this is exactly what the Kemovan® diamond-tipped stitching awl brings you. The ideal tool for anyone working with tough leather, whether you’re making dog collars, handbags, satchels, belts or other robust leather goods.
Why a diamond-shaped tip?
The diamond-shaped blade creates slanted holes that make it easy to pull through a saddler’s needle. This way, the leather fibers remain intact and your stitches will be not only strong, but also perfectly even and neat.
Ergonomic wooden handle
The pear-shaped wooden handle fits perfectly in your palm. It gives you a firm grip, precise control, and minimizes hand fatigue during longer sessions.
Premium quality, long lifespan
- Durable blade made from D2 tool steel or similar - stays sharp for a long time and handles tough leathers like those used in saddlery or heavy-duty accessories.
- Easy blade replacement - unlike most awls, the Kemovan® blade is secured with a hex screw, so you can swap it out easily. No need to buy a whole new tool just pop in a new blade and keep going.
Sharpening tip
When the blade gets dull, just strop it a few times on a wooden strop block #3325-00 with compound #3324-02. This keeps the blade profile intact and ensures clean, precise holes. Avoid traditional sharpening stones, which can alter the blade shape and reduce the quality of your work.
Kemovan® Diamond Awl a precision tool that takes your handmade leatherwork where it belongs: among professionals.

Expert's opinion

Craft isn't just about feel – it's about understanding the material and the process. If it works in my workshop, it'll work in yours.
I chose this awl for thicker threads and projects where a strong, prominent stitch is required. That’s exactly where the Kemovan 2.5 mm makes the most sense.
I first tried it with a 0.55 mm thread, but it got lost in the hole. Thicker thread fills the hole better and gives the seam a fuller look. For bags, harnesses or belts, it's a perfect match.
The replaceable tip is secured with a small screw, so swapping it out is quick and hassle-free. There's also a rounded tip available, which is great for marking or tracing. The handle fits well in the palm, although I do wish it had a flat edge. Without it, I have to pay more attention to the angle when piercing, otherwise the stitch line may turn out uneven.
That said, the awl feels solid overall, and the sharp point doesn’t hesitate even with thicker leathers. Working with it feels precise and reliable. If you're looking for a larger diameter for bold hand stitching, this one is worth a closer look.
I evaluate objectively what others only guess.
