Why a diamond-shaped tip?

The diamond-shaped blade creates slanted holes that make it easy to pull through a saddler’s needle. This way, the leather fibers remain intact and your stitches will be not only strong, but also even and neat.

The pear-shaped wooden handle sits well in your palm. It gives you a firm grip, precise control, and minimizes hand fatigue during longer sessions.

Sharpening tip

When the blade gets dull, just strop it a few times on a wooden strop block #3325-00 with compound #3324-02. This keeps the blade profile intact and ensures clean, precise holes. Avoid traditional sharpening stones, which can alter the blade shape and reduce the quality of your work.

A specification can tell you plenty. The workbench tells you the rest, so that is where I test it.

I was looking for a precise awl for finer work, one that works well with thinner thread and shorter stitches. The 2 mm Kemovan didn’t disappoint in that regard.

The tip is really sharp and pierces the leather cleanly without hesitation. Thanks to the smaller hole, the final stitch looks delicate, even, and has a nice definition. I tested it with 0.55 mm thread, which is a great combo for wallets or smaller accessories.

A big plus is the interchangeable screw-on tip. Besides the diamond-shaped one, there’s also a round tip available, which works well for tracing and marking. The handle fits well in the palm, though I do miss a flat surface that would help maintain the correct angle.

Other than that, it’s a reliable tool that does exactly what it’s supposed to. It’s sharp, has interchangeable tips, and is ready for fine stitching where every detail matters.
