Leather Strap with Cowhide Hair 20 mm, Zebra

Code: ZPH/20x4
Availability: In Stock 190 m
Leather strap made from chrome-tanned cowhide with a genuine hair-on cow pattern in zebra is a distinctive material suitable for the production of collars, leads, and other pet or leather goods. The material consists of a top layer with hair and a bottom layer of split leather. Thanks to its bold pattern and natural character, it gives finished products a unique and eye-catching look.

With this type of hair-on leather, the length is made up of joined sections of material, and these joins are a natural part of the product. The leather is not cut in a continuous spiral, but from individual straight sections that are subsequently joined together. The individual segments do not have a uniform length, and the pattern may not align perfectly at the joins.

The strap is available in a width of 20 mm and is supplied in packs of 10 meters. The surface is already finished, so no additional dyeing is required.

How to care for the strap? To maintain its appearance and properties, we recommend protecting the material from moisture, storing it in a dry place, and keeping it away from direct sunlight. For regular cleaning, use a soft brush or a dry, soft cloth.

The strap has been thoroughly tested in a certified laboratory, so we know the exact breaking load value. You can find the detailed test report.

Craft isn't just about feel – it's about understanding the material and the process. If it works in my workshop, it'll work in yours.

With this strap, one thing matters most to me: first unroll the entire coil and check where the joins are. The lengths of individual sections are not uniform, so it doesn’t make sense to cut blindly and only then deal with where the joins end up. I always locate the joins first and only then decide which part of the strap will be used for a collar, leash, or another component. For longer products, this is essential, mainly because the top layer is interrupted at the join, and under direct bending – for example around a buckle – it may start to lift.

When it comes to working with it, I didn’t find this strap problematic at all. I made both a multi-function leash and a collar from it, and at no point did I feel the material forced me to change my usual process. The cut ends need to be heat-sealed, and whenever possible, it’s best to stitch them as well.

I also tried to pull apart unstitched ends by hand, and the layers held firmly – I wasn’t able to separate them. Even so, I trust stitching more than adhesive alone at cut ends. If the material shows any tendency to lift at a join, I simply apply glue, press the layers back together, and stitch the area to prevent separation. I treat joins as areas that don’t belong in direct bends and deserve more attention during production than the rest of the strap.

What I enjoy most about this material is the final look of the finished product. On both the adjustable leash and the collar, the pattern worked perfectly on its own, so I didn’t feel the need to add any extra decoration. Paired with gold hardware, the result felt bold but not overdone.
