Fiebing’s Tan Kote – Protective Finish (Satin): 118 ml

Code: 2220-01
Availability: In Stock 20 pcs

Fiebing’s Tan Kote is a long-time classic in leather finishing, valued especially for how well it preserves the leather’s natural feel and breathability. Unlike standard acrylic topcoats, this finish is based on natural resins giving it the kind of properties saddlers and leatherworkers have relied on for decades. It doesn’t seal the surface into an airtight shell; it lets the leather “breathe.”

Key features for makers:

  • Resin-based formula: Offers a softer, more organic kind of protection than synthetic polymers. The surface stays breathable and keeps that genuine “leather” character.
  • Satin semi-gloss: Dries to a subtle, refined sheen that looks natural and won’t veer into the dreaded “plastic” look.
  • Versatile in the workflow: Beyond final sealing, Tan Kote also works as an excellent barrier coat when using products like Antique Finish, letting you control how much pigment the leather absorbs.
  • Supple and breathable: Leaves the surface smooth and velvety to the touch while staying flexible and breathable. Thanks to its composition, the leather can still be conditioned after drying-oils and conditioners can partially penetrate through the finish.

Recommended application: Apply evenly to dyed or natural leather using a wool dauber, a brush, or a spray gun. Tan Kote can also be used as a final coat over Antique Finish #21980-00 to even out the look and lock in pigment. For best results, apply in thin, continuous coats.

Because this finish remains breathable, keep in mind that Tan Kote is not fully waterproof. For items exposed to demanding outdoor conditions, we recommend following up with a suitable water-repellent treatment or wax.

Not suitable for suede or brushed leathers. After use, tools can be easily cleaned with water.

Craft isn't just about feel – it's about understanding the material and the process. If it works in my workshop, it'll work in yours.

Tan-Kote is a resin-based finish that I see more as an alternative to classic acrylic finishes than as a direct replacement. It has a distinctly different character from acrylics, which is an advantage in many cases. The surface looks more natural and retains its “leather-like” character.

When tested over alcohol-based dyes, one coat was not sufficient. Only two coats provided reliable protection and stopped the pigment from rubbing off. The surface has a light satin sheen, feels velvety to the touch, and is very pleasant in everyday use. The difference compared to acrylic finishes is noticeable from the first contact.

In practice, Tan Kote is also often used before applying Antique Finish as a barrier coat to help regulate its absorption.

Tan Kote gives leather a livelier appearance and preserves its natural character. However, it is not suitable where strong protection against water or heavy abrasion is required. In such cases, it is better to choose a different type of final finish.

For hand-dyed products that should remain natural while still needing light fixation and surface unification, Tan Kote is a very good choice. I mainly use it on smaller accessories, belts, or decorative items.
