Fiebing’s Pro Resist – Protective Finish (Glossy): 118 ml
Fiebing’s Pro Resist is an acrylic finish designed primarily as a barrier coat for antiquing techniques. This water-based emulsion dries into a sealed film on the grain side of the leather, giving you precise control over subsequent coloring and how much your embossed patterns really pop.
Because it forms a continuous, stable polymer layer, Pro Resist isn’t just for tooling and stamping it also works as a practical sealing topcoat. It’s a great fit for projects where you need reliable color lock-in while keeping the leather naturally flexible and looking understated.
Key features for makers:
- Excellent barrier effect: Helps you achieve strong contrast with antiquing pastes and gels by protecting the raised parts of the pattern from unwanted staining.
- Stabilizes surface pigments: Locks dyes into the leather and prevents release or migration, helping your finished piece stay colorfast.
- Protection from external factors: The dried layer acts like a shield against moisture, dust, and dirt extending the life of your leather goods.
- Balanced, natural look: Once dry, it leaves an even surface with a natural semi-matte to gentle sheen that doesn’t look plasticky.
Recommended application: When using it as a “barrier,” apply evenly over the stamped or molded design and let it dry completely. Then apply Fiebing’s Antique Finish #21980-00. When using it as a final protective topcoat, apply in thin, continuous layers with a damp sponge or a spray gun.
Mix thoroughly before use. Not suitable for suede or brushed leathers. After use, tools can be easily cleaned with water.

Craft isn't just about feel – it's about understanding the material and the process. If it works in my workshop, it'll work in yours.
I originally used Pro Resist as a barrier coat for antiquing, but I also tried it as a final finish and was pleasantly surprised. I wanted to see how it would handle pigment from alcohol-based dyes and what kind of surface it would create.
In a single coat, it formed an even film and reliably locked in the pigment. Application was easy, the finish spreads well and does not create streaks or blotches. Compared to Resolene, it is slightly milder, but it feels dependable and trouble-free.
Once dry, the surface has a soft sheen that is neither overly glossy nor fully matte. It is suitable where I need functional protection without a plastic look – for example belts, handbags, or notebooks.
Pro Resist is a good alternative if I am looking for a sealing finish without a pronounced gloss. Although it is not primarily intended as a final finish, in practice it performs very well.
I evaluate objectively what others only guess.
