Eco-Flo Super Shene is one of the most widely used finishes for smooth, natural vegetable-tanned leather. This water-based acrylic emulsion dries into a hard-wearing protective film that evens out the look of the finished piece and forms a barrier against moisture and dirt.
Despite the name “Super Shene”, the result is not an overly glossy, plastic-looking coating. What stays is a natural satin sheen. Use it when you want a clean surface and an even shade without losing the authentic character of the leather.
What it does in the workshop:
- Pigment fixing: Seals the dye and markedly reduces the risk of rub-off or colour transfer in use.
- Even surface: Visually evens out the small colour differences left by dyeing and gives the piece a tidy, uniform look.
- Workable consistency: Spreads easily, holds well on the surface and, applied correctly, leaves no patches or streaks.
- Water-repellent barrier: Protects the leather from the weather and accidental contact with water, which extends the life of the finished piece.
Recommended application: For the best fixing, apply two thin coats. The first coat anchors the pigment, the second forms a continuous protective film. Apply evenly with a damp sponge, a brush or by spraying. Always let the surface dry completely before the next coat.
Mix thoroughly before use. Not suitable for suede or brushed leathers. After use, tools can be easily cleaned with soap and water.

A specification can tell you plenty. The workbench tells you the rest, so that is where I test it.
I tested Eco-Flo Super Shene on finishes over dark alcohol-based dyes, where pigment sealing is often an issue. I wanted to see whether one of the most accessible acrylic finishes could lock the color in well enough to prevent rub-off, even under abrasion.
One coat was not enough. The pigment released slightly when rubbed. Only two thin coats created a continuous film that sealed the pigment and evened out the surface. The result has a natural satin sheen - it does not look plastic or overly glossy.
Application is easy, the finish adheres well and does not create blotches. Once dry, the surface feels smooth to the touch, is not tacky, and looks natural. Super Shene proved especially useful for me where a high gloss is not required, but I still want to be sure the color will not bleed.
It is a good choice for more delicate projects or where the goal is to preserve the natural look of the leather. However, if I am looking for truly strong protection (for example for items exposed to moisture or frequent use), I would rather reach for a stronger finish such as Resolene.
