Kemovan Leather Punching Hold-Down Plate
When pulling a multi-prong punch out of leather, you usually face three issues: lifted edges, prying on the prongs, and marks on the grain side. That’s where the Kemovan hold-down plate made from dense cocobolo comes in. This little piece of exotic wood, measuring 8.8 × 4.6 cm, helps you press the leather evenly against your work surface while you pull the tool out.
- Easier removal from glued layers – just place the plate down and pulling the punch upwards instantly feels more secure. The plate helps keep the leather in place and reduces the risk of delamination. You’ll especially appreciate this with thick belts or multi-layer harnesses.
- Gentler on the grain side – cocobolo has a smooth, naturally oily surface. It won’t scuff unnecessarily and helps prevent marks on the grain side of belts, sheaths, leashes, or bags.
- Supports straight pulls without prying – the cutout makes it easier to pull straight up without unwanted side-to-side rocking. This lowers the risk of prying, which delicate stitching punch prongs really don’t like.
The board makes the most sense when you’re using pricking irons with two or more prongs and working with glued layers or stiffer materials. With a simple awl, resistance isn’t such a big deal, since you’re not pulling out several prongs at once.
The main weakness? Wood is still wood. If a sharp prong strays outside the cutout, it can chip. But with proper punch control and a clean work surface, the plate holds up well even with frequent use.
