This 16 cm Craftool skiving knife is designed for thinning leather edges. You'll reach for it wherever the material overlaps or folds – for example, when preparing a fold for a belt buckle or card pockets in wallets. The all-metal construction gives the tool a solid weight that helps you guide the cut with a steady hand.
Ready to use, no stropping required
The main advantage over traditional saddlery knives is that it's ready to go straight out of the box. There's no need to regularly strop the blade on a leather strop with polishing compound. The tool uses replaceable blades. The package includes 3 spare blades, and additional blades (10 pcs #3002-00) can be purchased separately.
How the shaped head works
The bottom rail of the guide head acts as a stop that glides along the material. It helps you maintain your chosen cutting angle and reduces the risk of accidentally cutting all the way through the leather. The wide shape of the head lets you remove material in strips up to 2 cm wide.
Limitations and working tips
- Suitable materials: The tool works reliably on firmer leathers (particularly bovine veg-tan) with a thickness above 2 mm.
- Soft leathers: On supple, thin, or stretchy materials (such as garment or gloving leather), the blade tends to snag. Soft leather simply bunches up in front of the edge and the knife inevitably distorts it.
- Blade care: As soon as the knife starts to drag noticeably on the pull stroke or begins tearing the leather rather than cutting it, replace the blade with a fresh one immediately.
