A round eye, usually oval or teardrop-shaped, suits round material: rope, cord, chain, round leather or a narrow strap. On a swivel snap hook it turns a full 360°, so a rope lead or cord doesn't twist into a coil.
For flat webbing, a square eye works better: in a round eye a wide flat strap bunches up in the curve. Compare the inside width of the eye with the thickness of your rope or cord.
