A square eye has a straight bar, so flat webbing or a leather strap lies flat across its full width instead of bunching up in a curve. Choose it for anything built on a flat strap: leashes, harnesses, collars and bag straps.
Square doesn't mean fixed. On a swivel snap hook the square eye turns a full 360°, just like a round one, so the strap still won't twist. Whether the eye turns depends on the swivel, not on the shape of the eye.
Match the width. Pick an eye as wide as your strap: a 25 mm strap goes into a 25 mm eye. In a wider eye the strap slides to one side, the pull concentrates on one edge, and the strap wears through there sooner.
