High-Strength Aluminium Carabiners – what to choose?

Aluminium carabiners combine low weight with a breaking load of up to 550 kg and are used to make durable dog leashes. For lower-load and less expensive karabiners, see the Aluminium Keychain Carabiners category.

Parameter guide

What the parameters mean and how to choose the right values.

The colour of the version. On hardware it is the colour of the finish, on everything else (webbing, rope, leather dyes, edge paint, textiles) the colour of the material itself. A shade in a photo and on a screen differs from the real thing, so when ordering more for a production run already under way, compare by the name of the shade, not by the picture.

The dimension of the whole piece, end to end. It tells you how much room the fitting takes on the finished item; whether it fits the webbing depends on the eye width. The whole piece is measured, not just its working part, so two pieces with the same eye width can differ in length.

Inner width of the eye – determines the maximum width of material you can thread through. Choose an eye the same width or slightly wider than your strap, rope or leather lace.

Gate opening indicates how wide the gate opens. It determines the maximum diameter of the ring or D-ring it can clip onto.

Round: A universal shape – suitable for ropes, round laces and soft straps that easily conform to the eye shape.
Square: Better suited to flat and stiffer materials (waterproof webbing, leather belts) that would bunch or fold in a round eye.
Fixed (round or square): The eye is a solid part of the snap body and does not swivel, so the snap stays in line with the strap.

A variant of the same item that differs in construction, shape or surface: for hardware, for example with or without a lock, straight or curved, or all-metal; for straps and webbing, smooth, braided, hair-on or with a reflective stripe. Variants usually share the dimensions and differ in handling or looks.
