Every leathercrafter knows it's all in the details. AM saddlery snap fasteners will give your bags, wallets, or backpacks a truly professional finish and, unlike plastic, they can handle the toughest abuse. The four-part metal construction creates a rock-solid bond that you can snap and unsnap practically forever.

Key benefits:

  • Heavy-duty strength: A solid, all-metal build that shrugs off washing, harsh weather, and intense daily use.
  • Professional finish: The nickel-plated surface gives your products that clean, elegant saddlery style.
  • Lifelong durability: Forget about hook-and-loop tape or plastic snaps. These press studs will last for years without ever needing a replacement.

Best uses and how to pick the right size:

Highly recommended for all makers of leather goods, backpacks, sheaths, and outdoor gear. Choose the right snap size based on the thickness of your material (leather, faux leather, or fabric):

  • For material thickness up to 2.5 mm: Go with the 12.5 mm snap size.
  • For material thickness up to 4 mm: Go with the standard 15 mm snap size.
  • For thick materials (3 to 6 mm): Choose the extended 15-L version.

Things to keep in mind (limitations):

  • Mind your setting method: The maximum material thickness limits apply exclusively when setting with a hand press. A press applies smooth, perfectly vertical pressure and stops exactly when the snap is properly seated. This secures the snap firmly without causing damage.
  • The risks of hand hammering: When setting by hand (with a setter and mallet), you don't have 100% control over the force of the strike. It’s common for a heavy blow to make the post shift sideways and bend. Another frequent issue is striking the tool more times than necessary. This literally drives the post right through the top cap, deforming the snap and ruining its grip.
  • Tips for hand setting: If you're setting snaps manually, stick closer to the middle of the material thickness range and work with a gentle touch—a few precise taps with the mallet are all it takes. For thicker leather, we recommend slightly skiving the flesh side around the joint area.

Pro tip for an effortless workflow:

For a 100% success rate with zero scrap, we highly recommend setting your snaps using the #3990-00 hand press and the matching setting dies. If you prefer to work by hand, use the #8101-805-12.5 hand setter (or the corresponding size for 15mm snaps). You'll find all the compatible tools in the recommended products below.

Craft isn't just about feel – it's about understanding the material and the process. If it works in my workshop, it'll work in yours.

Heavy-duty snap fasteners surprised me right from the first time I set them. I wasn’t expecting miracles – I just wanted something I could attach without a press. Something that forgives a small mistake and doesn’t get crushed on the first try. And that’s exactly what I got.

When I use a press with a piston, it’s a joy. Everything lines up, the result is straight and clean. But the best part? These snap fasteners work perfectly even with a simple hand setter. Nothing slips, nothing looks crooked. Unlike regular snap buttons, they don’t punish every millimetre off.

Thanks to their solid construction and versatility, I even take them to workshops where complete beginners use them. And they manage just fine, even if they’ve never held a setter before. Perfect for hobby projects, smooth and efficient for professional work.

For me? These heavy-duty snap fasteners have earned their place on my workbench, fair and square. They’re reliable, versatile, and ready for whatever you throw at them.
