Eco-Flo Gum Tragacanth: Clear
Eco-Flo Gum Tragacanth (tragacanth) is a traditional preparation based on natural gum (resin), designed for smoothing and polishing both the edges and the flesh side of leather. Unlike modern edge paints, it does not create an artificial surface layer but penetrates deep into the leather fibers, binding and perfectly smoothing them. The result is a professional-looking, natural, high-gloss edge that enhances the structure of the leather material.
Key Features
- Natural Composition: A water-based formula with natural resin and a typical, characteristic scent.
- High Gloss: With proper burnishing technique, it can achieve a “glass-like” edge finish.
- Ideal Base Layer: Perfect for sealing the edge before applying covering edge paints (e.g., Edge Kote).
- Best Use: Delivers optimal results on natural or dyed vegetable-tanned leather.
Application
Shake the bottle thoroughly before each use. For best results, first trim the leather edge with an edge beveler to achieve a nicely rounded profile after burnishing. Apply a thin layer of tragacanth using a wool dauber, cloth, or sponge. After application, allow the product to become slightly tacky, then burnish the edge vigorously with a wooden or bone slicker.
Not suitable for suede or nubuck leather. Tragacanth may partially seal the leather pores, so apply it only after dyeing and finishing, or work with high precision during application.

Craft isn't just about feel – it's about understanding the material and the process. If it works in my workshop, it'll work in yours.
Tragacanth is an absolute classic that no advocate of traditional leathercraft techniques would be without. Working with it requires a bit of sensitivity to proper timing, but the result is well worth the effort. While it is not an adhesive in the true sense of the word, it beautifully aligns and sets the leather fibers in place.
My practical advice: A wool dauber is ideal for application, as it spreads the tragacanth evenly even across larger areas of the flesh side. My proven trick? After applying it to the edge, run the slicker over it lightly a few times to lay the fibers down, but do not start burnishing yet. Let the tragacanth absorb and become slightly tacky. Once the edge is no longer fully wet, then apply firm pressure with the slicker. You will notice that the glass-like shine appears much faster and with less effort.
Be careful with the grain side: If the grain has already been finished, simply wipe away any excess tragacanth immediately. However, on unfinished grain, be extremely cautious – tragacanth absorbs quickly and may leave undesirable stains on the surface that cannot be removed afterwards.
I evaluate objectively what others only guess.
