What brass is

Brass is an alloy of copper and zinc. It contains no iron, so it does not rust – instead of rust it develops a darker patina over time. We make hardware from it either by machining bars and wire (stronger, more precise shapes) or by casting into moulds – that is cast brass, which allows more complex shapes.

Why we use it for hardware

It holds its shape under load, machines and polishes well, and its warm golden tone suits natural leather. That is why we make snap hooks, buckles, rings and rivets from it – the classic choice for leather collars and saddlery goods.

When to choose it and when to look elsewhere

  • Leather collars and belts – gold tone with brown leather is a proven pairing.
  • Everyday wear outdoors – rain, mud and frost do not bother it.
  • Sensitive skin – the risk of an allergic reaction is low.

For permanent use in salt water, take marine bronze or 316 stainless steel – ordinary brass gradually loses zinc and becomes brittle in the sea over the long term; it can handle an occasional swim, just rinse it afterwards with fresh water. For a silver look with no maintenance, look at stainless steel.

How it ages and how to care for it

It darkens and develops a patina; this is not a flaw but a characteristic. If you like the patina, do nothing. If you want shine, polish the hardware occasionally with a cloth and polish; a clear lacquer keeps the shine permanently.

Good to know

Brass instruments are named after the metal itself – the same qualities that give a trumpet its sound let brass be shaped precisely and, over time, develop a patina instead of rust.
