    Low

    The most affordable option. When you need many pieces at a reasonable price, this is the right choice.

  • Strength

    High

    Resistant to strong and repeated pulling — even if the dog suddenly dashes after a cat. Holds shape under sustained and long-term load.

  • Corrosion resistance

    None

    Without surface treatment it will start to rust as soon as it comes into contact with moisture. Rust gradually compromises both function and appearance — surface protection is a necessity.

  • Water

    Unsuitable

    Water causes corrosion, swelling, mould or other damage. Must be dried immediately after wetting, and even then permanent deterioration is a risk.

Weight Medium Weight is noticeable — more sensitive animals will notice it. For miniature and toy breeds, consider whether it is still comfortable.
Allergy risk Depends on finish The material itself will not cause allergy, but the surface finishes commonly applied to it may contain nickel or other allergens. What matters is which finish you choose.
Aging Degrades Without a protective surface finish it deteriorates functionally and visually over time. Manifests as colour loss, surface roughening or the formation of rust.
Maintenance Regular maintenance To keep the material in good condition and looking good, it needs regular attention — treating, oiling or impregnating. Neglect significantly shortens its lifespan.

What steel is

An alloy of iron and carbon – the most widely used metal in the world. It's strong and affordable, but rusts without protection, so our steel hardware always carries a surface finish: nickel, chrome, zinc, matte black and others.

Why we use it for hardware

The largest part of the metal range: buckles, rings, snap hooks, rivets and tools. Nothing has yet beaten steel's ratio of strength to price.

When to choose it and when to look elsewhere

  • Everyday products at a good price – with a quality finish they last for years.
  • Tools – hardened steel holds an edge.

Suitability for damp conditions is decided by the finish, not the steel itself – check the details on the specific finish. For zero maintenance, choose stainless steel instead.

How it ages and how to care for it

As long as the finish is intact, there's nothing to worry about. On heavily used products, check worn spots occasionally; wipe damp hardware dry.

Good to know

Rust isn't just a cosmetic flaw – it spreads beneath the surface. That's why with steel it's worth paying for a proper finish, not a thicker piece of metal.
