Zinc die casting

Material

  • Price

    Low

The most affordable option. When you need many pieces at a reasonable price, this is the right choice.

  • Strength

    Medium

Handles everyday walks and regular use. Sufficient for calm and moderately active dogs, but may deform under repeated strong pulling.

  • Corrosion resistance

    Limited

Holds up fine in dry conditions, but starts to oxidise or change surface gradually with repeated moisture contact. Not suitable for permanently wet environments without protection.

  • Water

    Fresh water

Tolerates occasional contact with fresh water — rain, puddles, brief immersion. Better to dry after being in water, otherwise it may degrade over time.

Weight Medium Weight is noticeable — more sensitive animals will notice it. For miniature and toy breeds, consider whether it is still comfortable.
Allergy risk Depends on finish The material itself will not cause allergy, but the surface finishes commonly applied to it may contain nickel or other allergens. What matters is which finish you choose.
Aging Degrades Without a protective surface finish it deteriorates functionally and visually over time. Manifests as colour loss, surface roughening or the formation of rust.
Maintenance Regular maintenance To keep the material in good condition and looking good, it needs regular attention — treating, oiling or impregnating. Neglect significantly shortens its lifespan.

What zinc alloy is

A zinc alloy that is die-cast – the same family as Zamak. The most widely used material in our hardware: over a thousand products.

Why we use it for hardware

Die casting produces complex shapes with a smooth surface at a reasonable price. Snap hooks, side release buckles, buckles and keepers – all available in finishes from nickel through antique brass to rainbow neo-chrome.

When to choose it and when to look elsewhere

  • Colour-matched collections – the same shape in many finishes.
  • Good balance of price and looks.

Resistance to damp and suitability for allergy sufferers depend on the finish chosen – check its page. For extreme pulling force, choose steel or stainless steel instead; for the sea, bronze.

How it ages and how to care for it

Unchanged as long as the finish stays intact; wipe hardware dry and skip long soaking.

Good to know

Zinc casting can even reproduce fine relief detail – which is why our buckles have sharp lines and crisp logos.
