A zinc alloy with about 4% aluminium, a little magnesium and sometimes copper, which the manufacturer injects under pressure into a steel mould. Zamak is the trade name of the best-known family of these alloys; suppliers do not always state the exact grade. Fidlock magnetic buckles and the Herm. Sprenger XSpyder buckle also belong here.
Die casting produces complex shapes and fine relief at low cost, and the smooth surface takes plating well. That is why we offer snap hooks, side release buckles, buckles and keepers in finishes ranging from nickel through antique brass to rainbow neo-chrome.
Zinc die casting stretches much less than steel or brass before it breaks, loses much of its toughness in frost and slowly deforms under constant load. For working gear, strong dogs in winter and permanently loaded joints, choose steel or stainless steel; for the sea, 316 stainless steel. According to the manufacturer, Fidlock metal buckles are not intended for safety-critical use.
The look and ageing of a plated piece depend mainly on the finish; see its page. Where friction wears through the finish, the zinc turns grey, and with prolonged moisture a white powdery layer forms on it. Wipe wet hardware dry and avoid long soaking; zinc needs neither oil nor impregnation.
Zinc die casting can form thin walls and small shapes that sand casting cannot, which is why our buckles can carry even small logos.
Values describe the bare material without a surface finish; the finish page says what changes.
Price
Lowest
The lowest price class in this comparison. Suited to larger production runs and projects where unit cost is a priority.
Strength
Medium
Suitable for everyday products exposed to moderate loads. Repeated strong pulling may deform the material, so check the strength of the complete product for demanding uses.
Corrosion resistance
Limited
Suitable for dry conditions. Repeated contact with moisture can gradually cause oxidation or other surface changes, so wet environments require additional protection.
Water
Occasional fresh water
Tolerates occasional contact with fresh water, such as rain, puddles or brief immersion. Dry it afterwards to limit gradual changes to the material.
| Weight | Medium | A mid-weight option. For small collars, accessories and products worn for long periods, compare the weight of the complete product with a lighter material. |
|---|---|---|
| Allergy risk | Depends on finish | The allergy risk depends mainly on the selected surface finish, which may contain nickel or another contact allergen. Check the finish rather than relying on the base material alone. |
| Aging | Degrades | Without protection, both function and appearance deteriorate over time. Typical signs include colour loss, embrittlement or cracking, a rougher surface, rust or white corrosion products. |
| Maintenance | Occasional cleaning | Wipe occasionally with a dry or slightly damp cloth. No specialist products or fixed care schedule are required. |
