Material
Price
Low
The most affordable option. When you need many pieces at a reasonable price, this is the right choice.
Strength
Medium
Handles everyday walks and regular use. Sufficient for calm and moderately active dogs, but may deform under repeated strong pulling.
Corrosion resistance
Limited
Holds up fine in dry conditions, but starts to oxidise or change surface gradually with repeated moisture contact. Not suitable for permanently wet environments without protection.
Water
Fresh water
Tolerates occasional contact with fresh water — rain, puddles, brief immersion. Better to dry after being in water, otherwise it may degrade over time.
| Weight | Medium | Weight is noticeable — more sensitive animals will notice it. For miniature and toy breeds, consider whether it is still comfortable. |
|---|---|---|
| Allergy risk | Depends on finish | The material itself will not cause allergy, but the surface finishes commonly applied to it may contain nickel or other allergens. What matters is which finish you choose. |
| Aging | Degrades | Without a protective surface finish it deteriorates functionally and visually over time. Manifests as colour loss, surface roughening or the formation of rust. |
| Maintenance | Regular maintenance | To keep the material in good condition and looking good, it needs regular attention — treating, oiling or impregnating. Neglect significantly shortens its lifespan. |
A zinc alloy with aluminium, magnesium and copper (the name comes from the German abbreviations for the elements). It melts at a low temperature and is die-cast into steel moulds, producing precise, repeatable castings.
Branded hardware with fine mechanisms: Fidlock magnetic buckles, the Sprenger X-Spyder clasp. Zamak fills even the fine details of a mould that ordinary casting can't reach.
Anywhere shape and mechanism matter most. Bare Zamak can corrode, so it always comes with a surface finish – that finish is what determines its durability. For the sea, choose bronze or 316 stainless steel instead.
With an intact finish it keeps its looks; wipe damp hardware dry and avoid long soaking.
You know Zamak from your hand: most zip pullers in the world are made from it.
