Weight Medium Weight is noticeable — more sensitive animals will notice it. For miniature and toy breeds, consider whether it is still comfortable.
Allergy risk No risk Contains no nickel or other known contact allergens and does not release them during wear. Safe for sensitive skin without restriction.

What 304 stainless steel is

Steel alloyed with chromium and nickel. Chromium forms an invisible passive layer on the surface that renews itself – which is why stainless steel doesn't rust and needs no coating.

Why we use it for hardware

Snap hooks, buckles, rings and chains where you want a silver look that lasts, with zero maintenance. Most pieces are polished, some are brushed.

When to choose it and when to look elsewhere

  • Long life without care – leashes and collars for years.
  • Sweat and moisture – belts, bracelets, watch straps.
  • Sensitive skin – nickel is tightly bound in the steel, so the risk of a reaction is low.

For permanent use in salt water, take 316 stainless steel instead – ordinary 304 can develop small pits in the sea over time; after a swim, just rinse it with fresh water.

How it ages and how to care for it

It looks the same year after year. Wipe off fingerprints with a cloth, otherwise nothing.

Good to know

304 steel is "food grade" – it's what cutlery and kitchen sinks are made from. Its 18% chromium and 8% nickel content earned it the nickname 18/8.
