What stainless steel casting is

Stainless steel cast into a mould, not bent from wire or stamped from sheet. The mould is usually a ceramic shell around a wax model (investment casting), or sand. The grade can differ between individual parts. You will find it in the product description, or ask us.

Why we use it for hardware

Casting gives solid, rounded shapes in one piece: shaped buckles for belts and bridles, flat tri-glides, snap hook bodies. Most pieces are then polished or brushed, so they have smooth edges that spare both leather and webbing.

When to choose it and when to look elsewhere

  • Shaped hardware without a coating: for gear that gets wet, muddy or sweaty.
  • Salt water: for regular use by the sea, choose hardware listed as 316 stainless steel.
  • Critical loads: a casting can hide small internal pores, so for horse tack and working gear, go by the load capacity of the specific product.

How it ages and how to care for it

Salt and sweat trapped in tight spots, such as under a folded strap, can leave small rust spots over time. After the sea or heavy use, rinse the hardware with fresh water and let it dry, including springs and pins.

Good to know

Castings usually contain a little magnetic ferrite and can be slightly attracted to a magnet, so a magnet test alone proves little. The steel also contains nickel. If you are making an item for someone with a nickel allergy, check the grade and finish of the specific piece.

Values describe the bare material without a surface finish; the finish page says what changes.

  • Price

    Higher

A higher price class, typically associated with a particular material property, manufacturing method or finish. Check the other specifications to see what accounts for the difference.

  • Strength

    High

Suitable for strong, repeated pulling. Holds its shape under sustained loads better than materials in the lower strength classes.

  • Corrosion resistance

    Frequent water contact

Suitable for frequent contact with water, moisture and sweat without an additional protective coating. For salt water or chemicals, check whether the material has a marine rating.

  • Water

    Fresh-water immersion

Suitable for repeated wetting and immersion in fresh water. Any care requirements for the complete product still depend on its other materials and components.

Weight Medium A mid-weight option. For small collars, accessories and products worn for long periods, compare the weight of the complete product with a lighter material.
Allergy risk Low contact-reaction risk The material has a low risk of causing a contact reaction in normal use. Individual sensitivity varies, and the selected surface finish and other components also matter.
Aging Slow change Changes to colour, gloss and surface texture develop slowly during normal use. The exact result still depends on exposure, care and the complete product.
Maintenance No special care No special care is required. Rinse with water or wipe with a cloth when cleaning is needed.
