    Good price-to-performance ratio. Costs more than basic materials, but the difference in durability and appearance is noticeable.

    Handles everyday walks and regular use. Sufficient for calm and moderately active dogs, but may deform under repeated strong pulling.

  • Corrosion resistance

    Good

    Handles typical outdoor conditions including rain and morning dew. Does not need a protective coating for corrosion, but may react over time in more aggressive environments.

  • Water

    Fully waterproof

    Wet it, submerge it, leave it in water — fresh water will not harm it. No drying or treatment needed; water does not affect function or appearance.

Weight Heavy Noticeable weight that gives a robust impression, but may be uncomfortable for small and sensitive dogs. Better suited for medium and large breeds.
Allergy risk Hypoallergenic May contain potential allergens in its structure, but they are not released in amounts that would cause a reaction during normal wear. Safe for most sensitive individuals.
Aging Develops patina Naturally changes colour tone and surface texture. This is not a defect — it is a property of the material. The resulting patina gives the product a unique look that deepens over time.
Maintenance Low maintenance Occasionally wipe with a dry or slightly damp cloth and the material will stay in good condition. No special products or regular routine required.

What cast brass is

The same copper-zinc alloy as brass, just made differently: the molten metal is cast into moulds. Casting allows solid, shape-complex pieces – rounded snap hooks, bells, jingles.

Why we use it for hardware

Where the shape cannot be made by bending wire or by machining. A cast snap hook is substantial, feels good in the hand and carries all the strengths of brass: it does not rust and develops a patina over time.

When to choose it and when to look elsewhere

  • Leather goods with a classic look – the golden tone suits natural leather.
  • Bells and jingles – brass has a clean, carrying tone.

Cast brass is somewhat more brittle than wrought brass – for the heaviest loads choose brass or stainless steel. For permanent use at sea, marine bronze.

How it ages and how to care for it

It darkens into a patina; a polishing cloth brings the shine back, a clear lacquer keeps it permanently. After the sea, rinse the hardware with fresh water.

Good to know

Cast brass hardware is still made today using methods sailors knew a hundred years ago – brass holds up on boats because there is nothing on it for rust to take hold of.
