How anodising is made

Aluminium is immersed in a bath and an electric current converts its surface into a hard oxide layer. It isn't a coating; it's a transformation of the metal itself, so it can't flake off.

What it gives the product

Hardness, excellent corrosion protection and a choice of colours from silver to black. No nickel.

When to choose it and when not to

Everything made from aluminium and its alloys: snap hooks, Cobra buckles, swivels. Anodising can't be applied to other metals; there, electroplating or PVD does the job instead.

How it ages

Colour and surface hold for years; extreme abrasion against rock can wear the layer through locally, but everyday use won't.

What it pairs with

Sport and outdoor products; black anodising with reflective webbing is a proven combination.

  • Abrasion resistance

    Medium

    Suitable for normal everyday use. Traces of wear may gradually appear at exposed points with regular friction or contact with other metal parts.

  • Corrosion protection

    Outdoor exposure

    Protects the underlying material during typical outdoor exposure to rain, dew and occasional wetting. It may not be sufficient for permanently wet environments.

  • Damp conditions

    Outdoor use

    Suitable for typical outdoor exposure to rain, mud, moisture and sweat. Follow any care requirements of the base material and the complete product.

  • Aging

    Wear at contact points

    At points of regular friction (typically the buckle edge, snap contact point or strap) the finish gradually wears through and the base material shows beneath.

Process Electrochemical The material surface is converted into a hard oxide layer. This is not a coating applied from outside: the oxide layer forms from the material itself and cannot peel away like paint.
