What copper is
A pure metal with a warm reddish tone. It is softer than brass and heavier than steel – in hardware it earns its place where malleability and looks matter.
Why we use it for hardware
For rivets: softness is an advantage here, the rivet sets cleanly and holds. Copper elements also give products a distinctive, handcrafted look.
When to choose it and when to look elsewhere
- Riveted joints – copper cold-forms better than steel.
- A striking look – a reddish tone that darkens to brown over time.
Copper has no place in load-bearing parts (snap hooks, buckles) – it is soft; take brass or stainless steel instead.
How it ages and how to care for it
It patinas quickly and noticeably: from bright copper to dark brown. Anyone who wants the original tone back can polish it; most people let the patina do its work.
Good to know
Copper surfaces are naturally hostile to bacteria – which is why door handles and grab rails in hospitals have been made of copper for as long as anyone can remember.
