What 7075 alloy is

An aluminium alloy with zinc, magnesium and copper. It is one of the strongest aluminium alloys and yet has roughly a third of the density of steel; the aerospace industry makes highly stressed parts from it. The corrosion resistance of the alloy itself is only moderate.

Why we use it for hardware

For snap hooks and for Cobra side release buckles from AustriAlpin (FM and PRO STYLE series), where low weight matters as much as strength. Most pieces are anodised; some side release buckles have a black, polished or brass-plated finish, and each product states which.

When to choose it and when to look elsewhere

  • Leashes and sports gear: light hardware for canicross or mushing.
  • Load capacity by product: how much a part can take depends on its design, not just on the alloy. The Cobra FM side release buckle is intended for collars of small and medium dogs.

On a limited budget, look at zinc die casting; for permanent exposure to salt water, at 316 stainless steel.

How it ages and how to care for it

Bare 7075 slowly dulls and, with repeated moisture, sweat or salt, can corrode where the finish wears through. After the sea or a muddy walk, rinse the hardware with fresh water and let it dry; sand and salt can clog the buckle mechanism.

Good to know

Where aluminium touches another metal in damp or salty conditions, for example a stainless spring or a brass part, galvanic corrosion can occur, and it attacks the aluminium. That is why rinsing after the sea makes sense even for anodised pieces.
