Aluminium alloy (7003)

Material

  • Price

    Higher

Better durability, longer lifespan or significantly better appearance — and that is reflected in the price. The difference compared to cheaper materials is visible at first glance and after a year of use.

  • Strength

    High

Resistant to strong and repeated pulling — even if the dog suddenly dashes after a cat. Holds shape under sustained and long-term load.

  • Corrosion resistance

    Good

Handles typical outdoor conditions including rain and morning dew. Does not need a protective coating for corrosion, but may react over time in more aggressive environments.

  • Water

    Fully waterproof

Wet it, submerge it, leave it in water — fresh water will not harm it. No drying or treatment needed; water does not affect function or appearance.

Weight Very light Practically weightless. Even the smallest dog will wear it without noticing anything.
Allergy risk No risk Contains no nickel or other known contact allergens and does not release them during wear. Safe for sensitive skin without restriction.
Aging Minor changes Over time slight dulling or minor surface changes may occur. This does not affect function, but is visible on closer inspection.
Maintenance Maintenance-free No special care needed. Just rinse with water or wipe with a cloth — that is all.

What 7003 alloy is

An aluminium alloy with zinc and magnesium, related to 7075 alloy. It contains less copper, so it resists corrosion better and welds well; in strength it sits between ordinary aluminium and 7075.

Why we use it for hardware

We make swivels from it – the rotating joints on leashes that need to be light but must not bend even under a hard jerk. All pieces are anodised.

When to choose it and when to look elsewhere

Light leashes and gear for active dogs. If you need maximum strength, go for 7075; on a tighter budget, zinc alloy.

How it ages and how to care for it

The anodising keeps its colour, no maintenance needed. After salt water, rinse with fresh water.

Good to know

Alloys from this series are used to build bicycle and scooter frames – structures that take years of rain, sweat and vibration without any coating.
