What 6061 alloy is

A wrought aluminium alloy with magnesium and silicon and a small share of copper and chromium. It is one of the most widely used structural aluminium alloys: bicycle frames, boat parts and machine components are made from it. It is much stronger than pure aluminium and resists corrosion better than 7075 alloy.

Why we use it for hardware

Our high-strength aluminium carabiners are made from it. The snap hook body is formed from an extruded profile and is anodised; the anodising gives it its colour and protects the surface from wear. How much a snap hook can take is stated for each variant as its breaking load.

When to choose it and when to look elsewhere

  • Leashes for medium and large dogs: low weight with a high breaking load.
  • Rain and fresh water: handles everyday outdoor use well.

The snap hooks are not intended for securing people. For regular contact with sea water, choose 316 stainless steel.

How it ages and how to care for it

On edges and where the snap hook rubs against a ring, the anodising gradually wears and the aluminium underneath dulls. After the sea or a muddy walk, rinse the snap hook with fresh water and let it dry; sand and salt clog the gate. Replace a bent or cracked snap hook.

Good to know

The four-digit code of an aluminium alloy reveals its main additions: the 6xxx series is magnesium with silicon, the 7xxx series zinc. You cannot tell a 6061 snap hook from a 7075 one by looking at it; only a composition analysis shows the difference.

Values describe the bare material without a surface finish; the finish page says what changes.

  • Price

    Mid-range

A mid-range price class. Compare its specific durability, weight and finish with the less expensive alternatives before choosing.

  • Strength

    High

Suitable for strong, repeated pulling. Holds its shape under sustained loads better than materials in the lower strength classes.

  • Corrosion resistance

    Outdoor exposure

Suitable for typical outdoor contact with rain and dew without a protective coating. More demanding environments, such as salt water or chemicals, require a different rating.

  • Water

    Fresh-water immersion

Suitable for repeated wetting and immersion in fresh water. Any care requirements for the complete product still depend on its other materials and components.

Weight Very light The lowest weight class in this comparison. Useful for small products and accessories where every gram matters.
Allergy risk Low contact-reaction risk The material has a low risk of causing a contact reaction in normal use. Individual sensitivity varies, and the selected surface finish and other components also matter.
Aging Minor changes Over time slight dulling or minor surface changes may occur. This does not affect function, but is visible on closer inspection.
Maintenance No special care No special care is required. Rinse with water or wipe with a cloth when cleaning is needed.
