Acetal

Material

Acetal (POM) is a light, stiff engineering plastic for buckles and sliders. It absorbs almost no water and does not corrode, but strong sun dulls it over time.

What acetal is

An engineering plastic (polyoxymethylene, POM) with high stiffness and a smooth, low-friction surface. It exists as a homopolymer, such as Delrin, and as a copolymer; which type it is depends on the buckle manufacturer. Acetal holds its dimensions, so the buckle keeps clicking shut the same way.

Why we use it for hardware

Most of our plastic hardware is acetal: side release buckles, keepers, sliders and cord locks. It absorbs very little water, so it stays stiff when wet, and it has nothing that could corrode. It conducts heat poorly, so in winter it feels less cold than a metal buckle.

When to choose it and when to look elsewhere

  • Lightweight collars and harnesses, dogs that swim: low weight and nothing that could rust.

For the strongest dogs and working gear, choose a metal buckle, for example in 7075 alloy, and check the strength of the specific piece. Acetal is not suitable for permanent contact with heavily chlorinated water, such as in a hot tub.

How it ages and how to care for it

The sun has the main effect: after months to years in strong sun, the surface dulls and becomes chalky, and thin parts slowly turn brittle. Rinse off salt and mud with water. Replace a buckle that has turned white, is cracking or no longer clicks shut securely.

Good to know

Low friction is why acetal is also used for gears and bearings, and why webbing slides through a keeper with little wear. Adhesives hold poorly on acetal, so sew the buckle to the webbing.

  • Price

    Mid-range

A mid-range price class. Compare its specific durability, weight and finish with the less expensive alternatives before choosing.

  • Strength

    Medium

Suitable for everyday products exposed to moderate loads. Repeated strong pulling may deform the material, so check the strength of the complete product for demanding uses.

  • Water

    Seawater

Suitable for regular contact with seawater. Rinse the complete product after use if its other materials or components require it.

  • Weight

    Very light

The lowest weight class in this comparison. Useful for small products and accessories where every gram matters.

Allergy risk No known contact allergen No known contact allergen is listed for the material itself. Check the selected surface finish and the other components when making products for sensitive skin.
Aging Minor changes Over time slight dulling or minor surface changes may occur. This does not affect function, but is visible on closer inspection.
Maintenance No special care No special care is required. Rinse with water or wipe with a cloth when cleaning is needed.
