  • Abrasion resistance

    High

    Resists daily use even with active dogs. The surface holds its original appearance for a long time, even when in contact with straps, snaps or other hard surfaces.

  • Corrosion protection

    Good

    Reliably protects the underlying material during typical outdoor use — rain, dew, occasional wetting. May not be sufficient for permanently wet environments.

  • Nickel

    No

    The finish contains no nickel in any layer. A safe choice for allergy sufferers and for products intended for direct contact with sensitive skin.

Damp conditions Outdoor use Handles typical outdoor conditions without issue — rain, mud, moisture, sweat. No need to dry or treat specially after every water contact.
Aging Gradually dulls Over time loses its original gloss and the tone changes slightly. This does not affect function, but the surface eventually does not look as fresh as at the start.
Process Coating Organic film — lacquer or paint — applied to the surface and cured in an oven. Thicker layer than galvanic plating, available in any colour.

How matte black is made

A baked-on coating: hardware gets a black layer that is cured in an oven. It's thicker than electroplated layers and contains no nickel in any layer.

What it gives the product

When to choose it and when not to

Outdoor, tactical and urban black products; the first choice for dark hardware where there's a nickel allergy. For a dark shine instead, reach for black chrome or black nickel.

How it ages

The coating is durable; only a sharp edge will scratch through it – everyday wear won't.

What it pairs with

Black on black – webbing, leather and hardware in one tone; it also makes a striking contrast with reflective webbing.
