How matte black is made

A baked-on coating: hardware gets a black layer that is cured in an oven. It's thicker than electroplated layers and contains no nickel in any layer.

What it gives the product

A modern, glare-free matte finish, good corrosion protection, and peace of mind for allergy sufferers.

When to choose it and when not to

Outdoor, tactical and urban black products; the first choice for dark hardware where there's a nickel allergy. For a dark shine instead, reach for black chrome or black nickel.

How it ages

The coating is durable; only a sharp edge will scratch through it; everyday wear won't.

What it pairs with

Black on black: webbing, leather and hardware in one tone; it also makes a striking contrast with reflective webbing.

  • Look

    Dark / black

    Black or dark graphite surface, matte, glossy or satin depending on the specific finish. Creates a low-contrast combination with dark straps and a clear contrast with pale colours.

  • Abrasion resistance

    Medium

    Suitable for normal everyday use. Traces of wear may gradually appear at exposed points with regular friction or contact with other metal parts.

  • Corrosion protection

    Outdoor exposure

    Protects the underlying material during typical outdoor exposure to rain, dew and occasional wetting. It may not be sufficient for permanently wet environments.

Damp conditions Outdoor use Suitable for typical outdoor exposure to rain, mud, moisture and sweat. Follow any care requirements of the base material and the complete product.
Aging Wear at contact points At points of regular friction (typically the buckle edge, snap contact point or strap) the finish gradually wears through and the base material shows beneath.
Process Coating An organic film, such as lacquer or paint, applied to the surface and cured in an oven. The layer is thicker than galvanic plating and can be produced in a wide range of colours.
