What polyester is
A synthetic fibre (PET) from which the webbing and hand-sewing thread in our range are made. Compared with polypropylene, it is stronger and handles sun and abrasion better.
Why we use it
Webbing for a collar, harness or leash has to withstand pull, rain and sun at the same time. Polyester stretches less than nylon and does not lose strength when wet. We supply the sewing thread waxed.
When to choose it and when to look elsewhere
- Everyday outdoor products: for rain and for the sea.
- Products that spend a lot of time in the sun: the fibre resists UV radiation well. How long the colour stays bright depends on the dye.
Polypropylene is cheaper; for mud and a wipeable surface, PVC-coated polyester is the better fit. Polyester melts near fire or a hot surface. Where safety depends on strength, rely on the tested strength of the finished product, not on the material.
How it ages and how to care for it
Water does not weaken the fibre, and it dries quickly. After the sea, rinse the webbing with fresh water so that no salt stays in the weave. Strong sun slowly dulls the surface and the colours, and edges that rub against buckles gradually become fuzzy.
Good to know
The fibre absorbs less than half a percent of moisture, but soaked webbing holds water between the yarns until it dries. Polyester is usually dyed with disperse dyes. Some of them are known textile contact allergens, reported mainly in dark blue and black textiles.
