Polyamide

Material

Polyamide (nylon) is light and strong for its weight; we use it for paracord and Fidlock buckle bodies. It absorbs a little water and fades in the sun.

What polyamide is

Polyamide, better known as nylon, is a tough plastic that resists abrasion. Unlike acetal, it absorbs a noticeable amount of water: when wet it softens and loses a little strength, and once dry it returns to its original stiffness and strength.

Why we use it for hardware

Most of our polyamide is paracord, a braided cord with a sheath and a core. The military specification requires type III cord to break no earlier than at 550 lb (about 250 kg). That is the breaking strength, not a safe working load. The body of the Fidlock magnetic fastener is made of glass-fibre-reinforced polyamide.

When to choose it and when to look elsewhere

  • Paracord leashes, collars and bracelets: light, strong for their weight, easy to knot and braid.
  • Gear that stays out in strong sun: polyester resists UV radiation better.
  • Stiff parts that must keep their dimensions and stiffness when wet: acetal absorbs much less water.

How it ages and how to care for it

Fresh water does it no lasting harm; once dry, its stiffness and strength return. The sun does the most damage: long exposure fades the colour and reduces tensile strength. Replace faded or frayed cord on items that hold a dog.

Good to know

DuPont first produced nylon in February 1935, and it is considered the first fully synthetic fibre. During the Second World War, it replaced silk in parachutes. Dyes in synthetic fibres, including nylon, are among the most common textile contact allergens.

  • Price

    Lowest

The lowest price class in this comparison. Suited to larger production runs and projects where unit cost is a priority.

  • Strength

    Medium

Suitable for everyday products exposed to moderate loads. Repeated strong pulling may deform the material, so check the strength of the complete product for demanding uses.

  • Water

    Fresh-water immersion

Suitable for repeated wetting and immersion in fresh water. Any care requirements for the complete product still depend on its other materials and components.

  • Weight

    Very light

The lowest weight class in this comparison. Useful for small products and accessories where every gram matters.

Allergy risk No known contact allergen No known contact allergen is listed for the material itself. Check the selected surface finish and the other components when making products for sensitive skin.
Aging Minor changes Over time slight dulling or minor surface changes may occur. This does not affect function, but is visible on closer inspection.
Maintenance No special care No special care is required. Rinse with water or wipe with a cloth when cleaning is needed.
