What frost-resistant acetal is

An engineering plastic from the acetal (POM) family with a special resin additive. It stays tough even in frost, where ordinary plastics turn brittle – tested down to −20 °C.

Why we use it for hardware

For side release buckles on working and sport collars. Where a buckle takes a knock against frozen ground or ice in winter, toughness is what matters.

When to choose it and when to look elsewhere

  • Winter dog sports – mushing, skijoring, canicross.
  • Dogs that swim – water and salt do not affect the plastic; the buckle does not corrode and does not feel cold to the hand.

For products under the heaviest loads, choose a metal side release buckle in zinc alloy or a buckle in 7075 alloy.

How it ages and how to care for it

A stable material with no maintenance – rinsing off mud with water is enough.

Good to know

Not feeling cold is not a small thing: a metal buckle at −15 °C can be unpleasant for hands and fur alike, while a plastic one stays neutral to the touch.
