How nickel plating is made

An electroplated layer of nickel: the standard for metal hardware for decades.

What it gives the product

A silver shine a shade warmer than chrome, and good protection for everyday outdoor use.

When to choose it and when not to

An affordable shine for most products. Nickel sits right on the surface. For an allergy, choose stainless steel, a nickel-free finish, or matte black instead.

How it ages

It gradually dulls and wear points lighten; on an everyday collar that takes years.

What it pairs with

A neutral silver that goes with any colour; brushed nickel completes a matched set.

  • Look

    Glossy silver

Mirror-like or highly glossy silver surface with strong reflections. Fingerprints and minor scratches are more visible than on a matte surface.

  • Abrasion resistance

    Medium

Suitable for normal everyday use. Traces of wear may gradually appear at exposed points with regular friction or contact with other metal parts.

  • Corrosion protection

    Dry conditions

Provides a temporary barrier against moisture. Works well in dry environments, but protection weakens over time with regular contact with water or sweat.

  • Nickel

    Yes

Nickel is present in the surface layer that can come into contact with skin. This finish is not suitable for people or animals with a known sensitivity to nickel.

Damp conditions Occasional rain Tolerates occasional contact with rain, wet grass or damp hands. Regular soaking accelerates visible wear, so dry the surface after it becomes wet.
Aging Gradually dulls Gradually loses some of its original gloss and may change tone slightly. This is a visual change and does not by itself affect the function of the part.
Process Galvanic Metal layer applied by electric current in a bath. An even, thin and well-adhered coating: the most widespread method for surface finishing of metal parts.
