How an electroplated coating is made

A general term for electroplated finishes whose exact composition is set by the manufacturer of the given hardware piece. The layer is deposited by electric current in a bath.

What it gives the product

Corrosion protection for everyday use; the colour and tone vary by specific product.

When to choose it and when not to

Branded hardware where the manufacturer chooses the finish. We don't know the layer's composition down to the last element. For a nickel allergy, reach instead for a finish with a clear declaration: nickel-free or stainless steel.

How it ages

Like ordinary electroplating: a long service life, gradual dulling, wear at exposed edges.

    Gold

    Warm golden tone, from pale yellow to deep gold. Pairs particularly well with brown leather and straps in warm colours.

  • Abrasion resistance

    Low

    Thin decorative coating that gradually wears through with regular wear and friction. Wear appears first where a buckle or snap contacts the strap, ring or fur.

  • Corrosion protection

    Dry conditions

    Provides a temporary barrier against moisture. Works well in dry environments, but protection weakens over time with regular contact with water or sweat.

  • Damp conditions

    Occasional rain

    Tolerates occasional contact with rain, wet grass or damp hands. Regular soaking accelerates visible wear, so dry the surface after it becomes wet.

Aging Wear at contact points At points of regular friction (typically the buckle edge, snap contact point or strap) the finish gradually wears through and the base material shows beneath.
