    Better durability, longer lifespan or significantly better appearance — and that is reflected in the price. The difference compared to cheaper materials is visible at first glance and after a year of use.

    Handles everyday walks and regular use. Sufficient for calm and moderately active dogs, but may deform under repeated strong pulling.

    Unsuitable

    Water causes corrosion, swelling, mould or other damage. Must be dried immediately after wetting, and even then permanent deterioration is a risk.

  • Weight

    Light

    Low weight that does not restrict movement. Not perceived by the dog or owner even during all-day wear.

Aging Develops patina Naturally changes colour tone and surface texture. This is not a defect — it is a property of the material. The resulting patina gives the product a unique look that deepens over time.
Maintenance Regular maintenance To keep the material in good condition and looking good, it needs regular attention — treating, oiling or impregnating. Neglect significantly shortens its lifespan.

What cowhide leather is

Our cowhide leather is vegetable-tanned: the hide is processed for weeks in tannins from tree bark until it becomes a strong, shape-stable natural material – a process saddlers have used for centuries.

Why we use it

Straps, narrow leather strips and split leather for our own production – the base for belts, collars and bags. Vegetable-tanned leather can be cut, grooved, stamped and dyed, and the edges can be burnished smooth.

When to choose it and when to look elsewhere

  • Classic leather goods – belts, collars, harness straps.
  • Stamping and personalisation – vegetable-tanned leather takes stamped designs beautifully.

For dogs that swim and permanently wet environments, do not choose leather – untreated, it suffers from water; take waterproof webbing instead.

How it ages and how to care for it

With care it develops character: it darkens, softens and gains a sheen where it's handled. Treat it regularly with balm or wax; if it gets soaked, let it dry out away from heating and then treat it.

Good to know

The strongest part of the hide is the butt – the firm strip running along the spine. That is exactly what we cut belt straps from.
