## Description and construction

This compact steel anvil serves as a stable base for hand riveting. Its main advantage is access to tight and enclosed spaces. Unlike a bulky lever press, you can slip it inside a finished bag, backpack, or into the corners of more complex pieces where you need to support the rounded rivet head from below.

Milled Recesses to Protect the Rivet Head
The surface of the anvil features milled recesses in several sizes. These roughly match the shape of rivet heads and significantly reduce the risk of flattening or scratching them when struck with a hammer – something that can easily happen when riveting on a hard, flat surface.

Heads-Up and Practical Tips

Check the recess size: Before riveting, place the rivet head dry into the chosen recess. The rivet must sit firmly without rocking. If the head only touches the edge of the recess, you've picked the wrong size and deformation is likely when you strike.
Stable surface: Don't place the anvil directly on a bare table – you risk scratching or denting it. Put a firm dampening pad underneath (such as hard rubber or nylon). A material that's too soft will absorb the blow and the rivet won't set properly.
Strike direction: Always strike straight down with the hammer. An angled blow can bend the rivet shank and ruin the joint, even if you've chosen the right recess.

Alternatives for Different Production Needs
This anvil works well for one-off pieces, repairs, or hard-to-reach spots. In other situations, different tools may serve you better:

A hand lever press takes care of speed and consistency. It's the right choice when you're producing regularly and need every joint set with the same pressure.
A professional rivet setter with anvil takes care of precision in hand work, since the tool is made to fit a specific rivet diameter exactly.

## Limits and maintenance

* Water causes corrosion, swelling, mould or other damage. Must be dried immediately after wetting, and even then permanent deterioration is a risk.
* Without surface treatment it will start to rust as soon as it comes into contact with moisture. Rust gradually compromises both function and appearance — surface protection is a necessity.
* To keep the material in good condition and looking good, it needs regular attention — treating, oiling or impregnating. Neglect significantly shortens its lifespan.
* Without a protective surface finish it deteriorates functionally and visually over time. Manifests as colour loss, surface roughening or the formation of rust.
