Fiebing’s Antique Finish is a specialized paste designed to create a deep two-tone patina that gives leather products a professional antique look. This product is indispensable for highlighting the natural structure of leather and, above all, for bringing out the details in hand tooling or stamped patterns.

The paste settles into recesses, cuts, and perforations, creating strong contrast effects and giving the surface a rich character that enhances the craftsmanship of the leatherwork.

Key Features for Production:

  • Detail Enhancement: Effectively fills tooling and cuts, visually separating the pattern from the leather surface.
  • Two-Tone Patina: Creates a natural color transition and gives the product a rustic appearance.
  • Rich Sheen: Once dry and buffed, it leaves the grain side with a subtle yet deep sheen.

Recommended Application:

Before applying the paste, a barrier coat (resist) such as Fiebing’s Pro Resist or Tan Kote may be applied to selected areas. This ensures that the paste does not absorb into the grain and that maximum contrast is achieved. Apply Antique Finish generously using circular motions. Immediately wipe excess paste from the raised areas (with a cloth or wool). Allow it to dry thoroughly, then buff the surface with a soft cloth.

Fixing and Protection:

Antique Finish is not water-resistant, so it must always be sealed with a final topcoat after drying. For maximum protection, we recommend applying a thin layer of Fiebing’s Resolene #2270-01.

Not suitable for suede or nubuck leather.

Craft isn't just about feel – it's about understanding the material and the process. If it works in my workshop, it'll work in yours.

Antique Finish is an absolute essential in any leather workshop if you want your stamping to truly stand out. From my own experience, I strongly recommend not underestimating the preparation of the barrier layer.

When wiping off excess paste, I have found it most effective to slightly dampen the cloth or stretch it tightly over a piece of flat wood – this helps prevent you from accidentally removing color from the deeper areas where you want it to remain. And remember, Resolene as a final coat must be applied lightly (ideally sprayed on or applied with a sponge in one smooth pass) so you do not unnecessarily smear the settled paste across the entire product.
